One of the key ways that Emily initiated her "plan" was by asking for a transfer at her place of employment. When her request was approved, she moved 250 miles away to a different city. If nothing else, this undeniably made making new friends and disconnecting herself from her old buddies simpler. Then she contacted a healthcare practitioner in her new location and made an appointment for a complete mental and physical examination.

After meeting with the healthcare practitioner and going through numerous laboratory tests, it became apparent that Emily had made the transition from alcohol abuse to alcoholism and, as a result, needed alcohol rehab and alcohol detox. At this stressful time, the healthcare professional made it a point to articulate the different alcoholic symptoms and the common symptoms of alcoholism. In addition to spending a lot of time focusing on Emily's alcoholism symptoms, the healthcare practitioner also told Emily that her mental health evaluation revealed that she was clinically depressed and in need of therapy for this medical situation.

Due to her eagerness to follow through with the rehab program, after nine weeks of inpatient treatment, Emily was ready to initiate rehabilitation on an outpatient basis. At this point, she began working at her new job and over a period of a few weeks began building up her body by eating nutritious foods, working out, drinking distilled water, taking vitamins, and living an alcohol-free lifestyle.

After roughly eleven weeks of outpatient rehab during which time she never suffered through a relapse, Emily stopped going to alcohol counseling and instead began going four times per week to local AA meetings. Going to these meetings helped Emily continue her alcohol-free way of life, they gave her the support she needed, and they served as an unceasing reminder of the dangerous outcomes that are associated with excessive and unhealthy drinking. Compared with her life just a few short months ago, life was now worthwhile and full of promise that she could have never hoped for or attained while while she was engaged in excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
